Hi,

I hope you guys can help me. After finding my old (green) iMagic device after moving to a bigger home, I tried to set it up, but I am running into an issue while trying to start the Fortius software.

I created a Virtual Machine with Oracle VM and installed Win XP on it and the first version of the i-Magic software can be installed and finds the iMagic device via USB. The Tacx Trainer Software 1.1, where I have the software laying here also can be installed and recognizes everything.
Just with the Fortius software I am running into issues.
I have the CD with version 1.28, an update to version 1.3x (provided with the Extreme MTB course) and also the files for 2.02 to 2.04 from your website. No matter which version I try, when trying to start the software, I always get the following screen

I would be grateful for any help what I should try to get it running.

Hmm - looks like the VM configuration. Email me your logs and I can have a look.

In most cases, it's the graphics card settings that are to blame. Depth Buffer normally relates to a directx issue

Have you enables the 3D HW acceleration option in your VM settings.

I am not sure which log files you mean - I never worked before with VM and couldn't find a menu entry or similiar.

This probably does not have any bearing on the problem, but I will throw it out. As you are aware, the Fortius software requires a 32-bit OS, which I assume you have in your VM setup. I am not sure what handlebar controller you are trying to use for your Imagic, but I assume it is the yellow-green model (some were white as well). That is a 32-bit hardware device. It will not work on a 64-bit PC. I seem to recall that sometimes virtual setups still depend on certain hardware limitations in the host PC. I don't know, but perhaps Nic can explain if a 32-bit hardware device will work in VM if the host OS is 64-bit.

I should also mention that even when things are working, it can sometimes be difficult to get the Imagic hardware driver properly installed.

One possible solution to all of this is to install XP on a PC that is never connected to the Internet or to install XP on a separate boot partition and be sure that when it is booting to XP, you never connect to the Internet.

Running a 32bit VM on a 64bit Host should be fine, as long as the VM configuration is correct.

Alas, I couldn't read the text on the VM setup photo - but squinting, I still think its the video settings.

I suggest we step back a bit.

I assume you are using VirtualBox v6.1.12? Or lets put it another way, not v6.0.x.

According to Oracle
If you want 3D in XP you will need to stay in 6.0.x, which should get maintained for some time yet.

Then you can turn on 2D and 3D acceleration and have 256mb RAM for your video settings

Thank you for your replies.

I first downgraded VirtualBox to 6.0.24 and there was no 2D Acceleration option. Went further back to 6.0.12 and there at least I could find the 2D option, but no way to increase the Video RAM to more than 128MB.
After installing everything with 6.0.12 I still get the same error message.

Then I tried it with VMware Workstation 15 Player, where I get exactly the same error message when trying to start Fortius.

And the message in the settings that I have to update Tools to enable 3D acceleration doesn't help because according to the internal update program everything is up to date.

If anyone has any more clues, I would be very very happy

I think the simplest way to do this is to set up a separate partition for XP. Just never connect to the Internet when you are using XP. You could also get a second hard drive and put XP on it and boot to the drive when you want to use Fortius software. As I said before, people often have trouble getting the correct hardware driver installed for the Imagic headset. Out of curiosity, what headset do you have (model and color).

Hmm... the instructions are several years old (2013 to be exact). So most likely VirtualBox pre-v4. https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/

Mcorns suggestion would be the less fiddly way forward. Or going back to v4 -ish. I will also have a play around later today.

But its all to do with the 2D and 3D acceleration and memory allocation

I hit the same issue on my Mac running VirtualBox and XP.

6.1 doesn't work at all as it no longer supports Direct3D.

6.0.20 does, which is what I'm using. I've not tried the later 6.0 releases.

The error is due to not enough video RAM. It needs to be 256MB which is set under the VM's settings->Display->Screen section.

There's a bit of a trick to do this as the slider in the settings only allows 128MB. But, set Monitor Count to '8' and then you can set the RAM to 256MB. Then set the monitor count back to 1 and the 256MB setting sticks.

Alternatively, Quit VirtualBox, find the .vbox file associated with the VM. It's a text file. Edit the settings in that (take a backup first) to match the following...

I think you might also need to install the Virtual Additions extras CD and possibly set up the USB port for the Tacx cable.

EDIT: Just remembered, if it still fails to start with the very latest Fortius 2.x software, edit c:/windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts

Add the following line so it doesn't try to contact a dead Tacx VR server

Having just got a virtual machine to work which had this problem, I found it was related to direct 3d. Put the machine in safe mode, (F8 on startup, select safe mode). Then install the virtual box additions, selecting both usb2 and direct 3d support. The problem with mine was resolved!
If you install the additions not in safe mode, direct 3d isn't installed.

I have the same error with virt-manager (on Ubuntu).
Install Fortius up to 2.04, the Jungo driver is found.

Per default virt-manager uses QXL as video driver but it has no openGL or 3D support
I changed QXL to 256MB video memory (virsh edit <VMname> but the same error

Then tried Virtio. To change to Virtio, change "video" to Virtio and in "Display Spice" server Listen type to "none"
Then Check the box "OpenGL" Now the video driver selection shows up , in my case NVIDIA GF119 GEForce GT116 (render) - very old card.

After starting win95 it now asks for a video driver.
I found a NVIDIA XP 32 bit driver 340.42 package here:

But the installation faults with "the specified procedure could not be found"

Any ideas?
